Makeup, wild hairspray hairdos, songs that are sad with a pinch of melancholy, and a lot of Alcohol, well, you got the band The Cure. Robert Smith and company are a favorite band of mine, they were trail blazers with a lot of the 80’s pop synth, but it was much more than that. It was their presentation and message that separated them from other bands of that time, there presentation and message were so different that they contributed to the start of the goth scene. While other bands of the 80’s sang about goofy dancing or puppy love, or messing around sexually the Cure sang about Depression, loneliness, unattainable love all with a flicker of nihilism. The Cure was the poster-child of emptiness and that is your basic Goth 101, Everything sucks, whats the point I'm sad, Emo was Goth 2.0 in 2000's. Robert was famous for saying “I’m Robert Smith, and I am sad.” The Cure had many upbeat songs, so it wasn’t all sad sounding A-minor jams, however what is probably their biggest hit (Friday I'm in Love) is a song that Robert Hates, he calls it there "sellout song", mentions that it really didn't represent who they were. So why did they write the song...IDK. However the lyrics fed that message of hopelessness and loneliness that made you ask, “what’s the point of going on?” however they made it look cool. I used to watch the music videos not for the music but just so I could see the goth look...lol
Jesus, much like the Cure had a game changing presentation and message, however it was the opposite of what the Cure was telling. Jesus was of hope, attainable LOVE and purpose. Jesus worked his magic best when he was around people who had the hopelessness. John 9:1-12 As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind? “Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” said Jesus, “but this happened so that the works of God might be displayed in him. 4 As long as it is day, we must do the works of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work. 5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.” 6 After saying this, he spit on the ground, made some mud with the saliva, and put it on the man’s eyes. 7 “Go,” he told him, “wash in the Pool of Siloam” (this word means “Sent”). So the man went and washed, and came home seeing. 8 His neighbors and those who had formerly seen him begging asked, “Isn’t this the same man who used to sit and beg?” 9 Some claimed that he was. Others said, “No, he only looks like him. ” But he himself insisted, “I am the man.”10 “How then were your eyes opened?” Jesus saw a man that was full of loneliness and despair, Jesus used this heinous issue to bring hope to this man and most of all bring Glory to GOD. I know I myself have been down that rabbit hole of loneliness and depression, as have all of us. It maybe illness or other life issues but Jesus offers hope and purpose. Ephesians 2:8-10 “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” All we need to do is believe in faith in Jesus Christ, God has made us to LOVE him. His love will fill the hole in our hearts, and give us a purpose through our relationship with him. Jesus offers us a fulfilling relationship and identity with him and when we are not living in that, we have nothing but loneliness, hopelessness and pointless living. Jesus wants better for you, he gave everything to offers us everlasting life, He has a very attainable LOVE.
